California offers digital driver’s licenses (mDLs) for iPhones and Android devices

California offers digital driver’s licenses (mDLs) for iPhones and Android devices, allowing you to add your ID to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet for use at select businesses, online, and for TSA screening at participating airports, though you still need your physical card as backup. To get yours, open your phone’s wallet app, select adding a driver’s license/ID, and follow prompts to scan your physical license and take a selfie for verification by the DMV.

How to Add Your Digital ID:

  1. Open Wallet App: Open the Apple Wallet app on iPhone or the Google Wallet app on Android.
  2. Start Adding: Tap the plus (+) sign or “Add to Wallet/ID card”.
  3. Select ID: Choose “Driver’s License or State ID” (Apple) or “California” (Google).
  4. Verify: Follow the steps to scan your physical license and take a selfie; the DMV verifies your identity.

Where You Can Use It:

  • TSA: At over 250 participating airport checkpoints (carry your physical ID too).
  • Businesses: At select locations, venues, and online for age/identity verification.
