STEPS TO OBTAIN A PROVISIONAL LICENSE

  1. Be the right age: You must be at least 15.5 years old but under 18.Â
  2. Complete driver’s education: You must complete a driver’s education class or enroll in an integrated driver education/driver training program. DriversEd $9.75

3. If you are at least 15 1/2 years old but under 18, you will need to apply for an  instruction permit before you can hit the road. Here’s how it works:

  1. Fill out an application: You must complete a Driver License or Identification Card Application (DL 44) form.Â

  2. Have your parents or guardians sign: Your parents or guardians must sign the DL 44 form.Â

  3. Provide required documents: You must provide an acceptable birth date/legal presence document or identity document.Â

  4. Pass a vision test: You must pass a vision test.Â

  5. Agree to drug and alcohol tests: You must agree to comply with requests for drug or alcohol tests.
  6.  Complete Forward Driving School 6 hours behind-the-wheel training.
  • 3 lessons – 2 hours each ( 3 to 6 weeks separation in between classes recommended for practice with family members. Total need 50 hours)
  • After  completing Forward Driving School 6 hours behind-the-wheel training  student receive Certificate of  6 hours completion, Form DL400D

A provisional instruction permit does not let you drive alone not even to a DMV office to take a driving test.

To obtain a provisional license you must:

  1. Be at least 16 years old.
  2. Have held the instruction permit for at least 6 months
  3. Have your parent’s or guardian’s signature on your instruction permit verifying that you have completed 50 hours of driving practice, of which 10 hours must have been at night (refer to the Parent-Teen Training GuideÂ
  4. Pass the behind-the-wheel driving test.
  5. If you fail, you must wait two weeks before you can take the driving test again.
  6. Give your thumb print.
  7. Have your picture taken.

You will receive your Provisional License by mail in a few weeks.

In California, provisional driver’s licenseÂinclude restrictions :Â

  • Driving hours

    For the first 12 months, drivers under 18 cannot drive between 11 PM and 5 AM.Â

    Drivers under 18 cannot transport passengers under 20 without being accompanied by a licensed driver who is:Â

  • Cell phone use

    Drivers under 18 cannot use a cell phone while driving, even with a hands-free device, except in an emergency.Â

  • Underage drinking

    California has a zero-tolerance policy for underage drinking and driving.Â

Provisional licenses are given to people under 18 who have an instruction permit. The restrictions are in place because teens are more likely to be involved in fatal crashes than drivers over 20.Â

NOTE: Local laws may further restrict or prohibit driving during specified hours.
